Band Uniforms

Brighton Middle School Band

Uniform Guidelines 2008-2009

Student Uniform Responsibility

-Wear your uniform with pride.  Respect and care for the uniform

-Uniforms are not allowed to be taken home.  The uniforms will be stored in the band hall.  You will be issued the uniform at the beginning of each event and it must be returned after performance.

-You must carry a personal bag for each event and competition.  This bag must contain your black band shoes, black sock (solid black, no designs), change of clothes, T-shirt and personal items.  Note: During the cool weather season you might want to bring along a jacket.

Student Care of Uniforms

-Uniform bags will be identified by your name and contain ONLY your uniform pieces.

-Take care when putting on the uniform.  If you need help with any part ask an adult to help you.

-Be careful with the uniform.  Use the garment bag as a barrier between the ground and uniform should you need to lay it down.  Avoid leaning against brick or abrasive surfaces that might snag the material.  Avoid eating while wearing the uniform.  Should a spill or stain occur, report it immediately so it can be cleaned.

- NO items [especially cell phones] should be carried into the performances.

-You must wear close fitting shorts under your uniform pants and a t-shirt underneath the uniform shirt/blouse.  These precautions will prevent sweat staining of the uniform.

-Always hang up your uniform correctly, the way you received it.

-You will be responsible for any lost part or damage to the uniform while in your possession.  Replacement of a full uniform is $125.

 Competitions and football games

You will be informed by Mr. Womack when and where to report in full uniform.  Arrive early enough to allow yourself time to dress and be dressed before “call time”.

-Uniforms are issued from the uniform closet in the band hall.  Change into uniforms.  Have a buddy inspect to confirm that you have everything on correctly.

NOTE: Chaperones will be available for any assistance needed, simply report to the band hall for help.

-Keep your garment bag and hangers with your personal possessions.  DO NOT leave bags hanging in bathrooms etc.  There will be consequences for leaving any uniforms materials, bags, boxes, etc. unattended..

-Before performances, Booster Officers and Mr. Womack will hold a uniform inspection.  Refer to “individual responsibilities” section in the handbook.

-Boosters MAY have socks for sale at each performance.  These items will not be for sale after inspection!  Remember, the irresponsibility of one individual can possibly affect the whole band’s score.

After Performance

-After performance:

-Step 1. Change into your clothing.  PLEASE remember deodorant!

-Step 2. Hang up your uniform properly.  Have a buddy inspect to see if your uniform is hung properly.

-Step 5. Return your uniform bag to the uniform closet, UNZIPPED.  The Booster Officers will inspect the uniform to make sure everything is hung properly.  Wait for the Chaperone to inspect the uniform and give you the okay to go.  If there is problem, your uniform will not be accepted and you will report to the back of the line while you correct the problem.  Get it right the FIRST time so no one’s time is wasted.

Note: DO NOT leave any personal items in your uniform bag especially your socks.   Any personal items left in the bags will “disappear”, never to be seen again.

Cleaning

-The booster volunteer parents are taking responsibility for washing the uniforms.  Should you abuse the uniform and need an extra cleaning outside the normal cleaning schedule, you will be charged $5.00 each time.

With so many band members trying to acquire their uniform and get dressed at the same time, we must adhere to these policies and procedures.  Our uniforms are precious & expensive items that are difficult to replace.  Many of you worked really hard through fundraisers to acquire them.  Please take care of our uniform and pay attention to how you wear it.  Remember:  In the eyes of the visual judges, your uniform’s cleanness, neatness, and proper fit are just as important as how well you play the music.

We are looking for parents willing to launder uniforms about 2 or 3 times during the year. We will be growing again this year, and will need about 10 families to handle the job.

Along with laundering, we need some sewing moms to hem & mend.  These alterations must be completed within the first few weeks of school, with only occasional mending during the year.  We start fitting band students during the end of August beginning of September, so let me know if you might be able to help.

If you would like to handle a group of uniforms to either launder or hem, please let me know as well.
